We are reading, Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, by Yuval Noah Harari, Harper Perennial | February 10, 2015.

Tonight, Ch. 5, “History’s Biggest Fraud,” begins our discussion of “Part Two The Agricultural Revolution.” During this revolution, which occurred over thousands of years, about 10,000 years ago between 9500-8500 BC, Homo sapiens gave up their hunter-gatherer ways in favor of what they believed were the luxuries and benefits of a farming lifestyle. It wasn’t, according to the case Harari begins to build. He says, “The Agricultural Revolution was history’s biggest fraud.” Instead of an exciting, interesting, varied life of diverse nutrients, our species received increased exposure to disease and famine, diminished immunity, increased child mortality, more suffering, and more work to survive. Here the author traces when and how agriculture spread, and its costs and benefits for people, animals and land.

We are not using facilitators this session. Everyone is asked to come prepared to read a passage and lead the group in reflecting on the chosen material. We may also bring discussion question(s), and/or item(s) to share (such as a picture, video, article, etc.)
